'French matting' is a term used to describe the decoration of mats with watercolour wash panels and coloured lines. Before the introduction of coloured matboards, mats were decorated using lines and colour washes. This traditional way of decorating matboards was used extensively in Europe and England 18th and 19th centuries. However, the art of traditional mat decoration has not disappeared and it can be found in some framing shops. The staff at Framing Matters have the skills to apply lines and washes to matboards in order to give traditional artworks the desired look.
